Two Symptoms, One Likely Cause

A room that never quite cools down and air that carries a faint smoke or dust smell during a Santa Ana wind event or a nearby fire season can look like two unrelated complaints. Testing for Duct Leakage Instead of Guessing

We don't recommend a filtration upgrade before checking whether the ducts delivering that filtered air are actually sealed. A duct leakage test measures how much air is escaping the system before it reaches the registers, using equipment that pressurizes the duct system and reads the loss directly rather than relying on a visual inspection alone, since a lot of leaks happen at connections tucked behind insulation or in spots that aren't visible without opening things up.

Where Leaks Typically Show Up in This Housing Stock

Older homes across Santa Monica, Westwood, and the flatter sections of Brentwood often still run ductwork installed decades ago, with connections sealed using materials that degrade over time. The most common leak points are at boots, the connection between ductwork and a register or return grille, and at the main plenum near the air handler, where metal and flexible duct sections meet and the seal can loosen as a house settles or after other attic work disturbs a connection.

Return Air Placement Matters as Much as Supply Leaks

Installing a high-MERV or HEPA-level filter on a system that's still leaking conditioned air out and unfiltered air in through duct gaps addresses only part of the problem. The filtered air still has to travel through the same leaky ductwork to reach the room, and unfiltered air is still getting pulled in through the return-side leak regardless of what filter sits at the air handler. We seal accessible leaks with mastic sealant, and for more extensive or inaccessible duct damage, an internal sealing process reaches connections that aren't physically reachable from outside the ducts, before recommending any filtration upgrade on top of that work.

What Filtration Actually Adds Once Ducts Are Sealed

Once the delivery system is sealed, a higher MERV-rated filter captures more of the fine particulate that standard filters let through, including much of what's in wildfire smoke, provided the system can handle the added airflow restriction without straining the blower.
